Pressure ulcers are an extremely common disease that can cause serious pain. They can also cause bone and muscle injuries beneath the skin. The wounds grow quickly and can necessitate hospitalization. As the skin age, it becomes thinner and more vulnerable to injuries. They can also form beneath a plaster Paris or fiberglass dressing. There are four kinds of pressure ulcers. The doctor will determine the severity of the pressure ulcer and examine the scarring.
The first stage of a pressure ulcer starts with skin that is completely intact in color. The ulcer could advance to stage IV and include exposed bone, tendon and other underlying structures. Stage IV pressure ulcers can result in tunneling and undermining. Their depth can vary based on anatomical location. A pressure ulcer can be deep or shallow dependent on its depth. The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel has defined four stages of pressure ulcers.
Pressure ulcers can be painful lesions on the skin resulting from exposure to excessive pressure. Patients who suffer from bedridden conditions or are confined to a wheelchair are more likely to develop these. They typically appear on backs and arms and are usually followed by a drainage that resembles pus. Although they heal gradually they can cause serious effects on the underlying tissues. Other conditions may also exist which include peripheral vascular disease.
