Pressure ulcers are a frequent condition that can cause significant discomfort. They can also lead to injury to muscles and bone beneath the skin. These ulcers develop quickly and can necessitate hospitalization. As the skin ages it gets thinner and more prone to injury. They may also develop within a plaster of Paris or fiberglass dressing. There are four kinds of pressure ulcers. Doctors can tell whether a pressure ulcer is serious by evaluating the depth of the wound and the look of the scar.
Stage I of a pressure ulcer starts with a skin that is intact and purple. The ulcer could develop to stage IV, with exposed tendon, bone and other underlying structures. Stage IV pressure ulcers can involve tunneling and undermining. The thickness of a pressure wound varies depending on its anatomical position. A pressure ulcer could be shallow or deep in relation to the depth. The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel has defined four stages of pressure ulcers.
Pressure ulcers are skin lesions which develop as a result of prolonged pressure. They are more common in patients who are bedridden or in wheelchairs. They usually appear on their arm and backs and are typically associated with pus-like drainage. Pressure ulcers can cause serious tissue damage beneath and heal slowly. Other diseases may also be present such as peripheral vascular disease.
